Understanding how a Tax Saver FD works is simple. It works like a traditional FD but with tax-saving benefits. Investors deposit a lump sum for 5 years in a Fixed Deposit at a fixed interest rate. The invested amount (principal) is eligible for deduction from the taxable income of the investor (total deduction allowed under section 80C: ₹ 1,50,000). The interest earned is taxable. Premature withdrawal is not allowed and there is no auto-renewal option.
Both individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) can invest in a Tax Saver FD. You can open it with any public or private sector bank except cooperative and rural banks. If you opt for a joint account, only the primary account holder gets the tax benefits.
