WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

Women Empowerment

Empowering women through economic independence

We believe that empowering women to be economically independent and self-reliant is vital for India’s future. With this view in mind, ICICI Bank launched the Self Help Group - Bank Linkage Programme exclusively for underprivileged women in rural India. The programme provides unsecured loans to these women-led groups and helps them in starting or expanding their own businesses. Through this programme, the Bank aims at promoting entrepreneurship among rural women and in helping them to earn sustainable livelihoods.

Bringing about change at the grassroot levels
In 2011, ICICI Bank had undertaken the SHG-Bank Linkage Programme to provide a suite of banking services including loans to Self Help Groups (SHGs). SHGs are close-knit groups of rural women coming together to support each other financially. The programme is focused on providing loans to groups who meet the credit requirements of the Bank.
Over the years, ICICI Bank has provided loans to over 200,000 SHGs. These loans are utilised by the SHG members to fulfill their business requirements like buying farm equipment and procurement of raw materials among others. With the support of ICICI Bank, the rural areas where we operate have observed a gradual rise in the number of entrepreneurial ventures spearheaded by women.
More power to women
When a woman is empowered, she not only transforms her own life, but also transforms the lives of her family members. ICICI Bank provides loans to SHGs comprising 100% women entrepreneurs and helps them in contributing to their family income. The Bank has helped over 25 lakh underprivileged women and their families across rural and semi-urban India in becoming financially independent and in securing a better future for them.
Empowering self-reliant Indians
Since the launch of the programme in 2011, ICICI Bank has provided loans worth Rs. 50,000 crore to SHGs. SHGs can apply for a loan without providing any guarantee to the Bank. These loans are extended for a period of up to 36 months and hence women have sufficient time to pay back their loans comfortably. All they need is an idea for their micro-enterprise and a will to make a difference.
Besides sanctioning loans, the Bank has dedicated teams to help the groups understand the basics of borrowing like rate of interest, instalment amount, number of instalments, etc.
Through this holistic approach and support, the programme has played a vital role in promoting self-reliance in the villages it operates in.
