EDUCATION

Education

Empowering schools in rural India

It is believed that children should be taught how to think, but not what to think. Driven by this philosophy, we at ICICI, have set out on the journey of not only educating children, but also training teachers.

Access to quality education is fundamental to the growth of India. ICICI Foundation has partnered with the government and various NGOs to improve the quality of the teaching staff and the curriculum and is also working towards improving the infrastructure in schools, so that we can make a real difference.

We have successfully empowered over 950 rural schools to provide their students and teachers with a brighter future. The positive impact created by our initiative can be seen in many schools across the country, from the remote areas of Kargil to the slums of Dharavi in Mumbai.

Creating a healthy learning environment for better outcomes
ICICI works to improve teaching and learning outcomes in state-run schools focusing on primary class children (class 1-5) in the elementary education space.
ICICI Foundation has partnered with the state governments of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh for implementing School and Teacher Education Reform Programme (STERP) in 250 schools. The STERP aims to deliver child-centric learning environment in government schools ensuring them to be Right to Education (RtE) complaint through:
  • Improvement in the classroom learning environment
  • Providing support for teacher development
  • Comprehensive and continuous evaluation of students
  • Strengthening community participation in school management
  • Advocacy on physical infrastructure
  • Quality education- identifying and reintegrating children who are dropouts or irregular
  • Sports for development (S4D) initiative, that has enabled access to sports for children in many schools, resulting in increased attendance, improved classroom behaviour and academic achievement
We are also facilitating the infrastructure overhaul of over 700 schools in Kargil and Mumbai.
Enabling teachers to deliver best-in-class learning experiences
A teacher has the onerous responsibility of igniting young minds and instilling in them a love for learning. ICICI endeavours to empower teachers to ensure overall improvement in the standards of education in the country.
We developed well-structured training programmes for teachers that encompass both academic and non-academic areas. In addition, we helped in reforming the B.Ed. syllabus in accordance with the guidelines and recommendations of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). Over 300,000 teachers in rural schools across Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Kargil have benefitted from these programmes.
Charting the course for transforming learning experiences
Learning dispels darkness and leads the learner to light. Through its array of initiatives towards enhancing the learning experience, ICICI Foundation, through its various initiatives, has positively impacted the lives of over 13 million students across the country. We have played a significant role in revising and refining the dated curriculum and textbooks for elementary education.
The outcome of this initiative has been encouraging. There has been over 91% reduction in the number of drop-outs at the school level. Many schools have also witnessed up to 18% increase in the enrollment of new students.
